Tips on artificial grass

How To Recycle Artificial Turf?

Artificial turf is used in sport facilities, gardens, schools, offices, universities and in many more places because it is incredibly useful and affordable, but what do we do with it once its useful life has ended?

Do we throw it away? Do we keep it somewhere else? Sure, you can. But the best alternative for us and our planet is to recycle it.

And even if you don’t feel like recycling the entire artificial turf, there are other uses you can give it, even after its useful life has ended.

Today we tell you everything about recycling and repurposing this material, and how you can do it.

How Can Artificial Turf Be Recycled?

Many people don’t know that all the meters they have of artificial turf can actually be recycled, the reason is that most of the times people don’t know what they are made of, and after a few years, they don’t see the use to it.

Luckily for us, and our planet, we can still recycle artificial turf. They are mostly made out of polypropylene, polyethylene, and nylon. All of those three materials are recyclable.

The thing with those materials is that, even though they are totally recyclable, they still need to be carefully separated (just like many other plastic accessories, in fact).

This separation wasn’t possible a few years ago, but many recycling centers are keeping up with how the industry is advancing, and they have developed technology that allows them to do this.

Of course, this is not a cheap process, but more and more pressure is being put in companies to make them recycle more, so the days of tossing your old turf in the landfill are gone.

Which, essentially, still makes artificial turf a sustainable option, is that you don’t need to lawn it nor water it, but now you can also send it to a recycling center and give it a second chance. And on top of it, it lasts more than 7 years, many more depending on the type of turf you choose.

With used artificial turf new objects can be made, however, we can’t still make brand new artificial turf out of the old ones, but who knows, maybe in a near future you can give away the old artificial grass for recycling and in a few weeks have it back completely new.

The recycling process basically consists on separating the materials, and then proceeding to the re-pelletizing process, which consists in cutting the plastics by type, cleaning them, melting them, and transform them into a huge number of different things.

So what do you have to do? Just take your used artificial turf to the closest recycling center and let them take care of it.

Make sure you deliver it to a duly authorized plastics manager. The list of authorized managers is public information and normally they are also found on the web pages of the local authorities.

If you want to give it a different use, it can still be repurposed for other things.  We tell you some uses for your old artificial turf but first, we explain how to know whether your artificial turf needs to be changed or not.

How do I know if my artificial turf needs to be changed?

Before thinking about replacing the artificial turf you have at home or the office, you need to make sure its useful life has ended.

They usually last more than 7 years, up to 10 or even 15 depending on the quality, weather and caring conditions. So before that time, there’s really no need to worry about it.

For example, if you are buying a new house that has artificial turf, we recommend you to ask the previous owner how long it has been there, but whether you can’t find this information or if you truly are worried about the time of changing the grass, here’s how you will know if it needs to be changed.

First of all, artificial grass must look like the natural and well-cared grass you see in the park, if the turf is not green, and parts of it are falling apart slowly, it’s time to change it.

Secondly, artificial grass does not smell, but if yours smell moist, or has any kind of weird smell, that’s a sign something is not working properly, and most of the times, the issue is that it’s too old.

If you walk on it and feel rough, it’s time to let it go. Artificial turf is soft, like real grass is, and it shouldn’t be uncomfortable to walk on it at all.

So if you have already checked all those options, and any of them is affirmative, it is the time to change your turf, but if you can’t find any recycling center near you, or if you want to give it a second chance, there are a few things you can do.

However, please keep in mind the repurposing your old grass is not a form of recycling, it only delays its disposal. In a way, yes, you are helping the environment, but eventually you will have to make the trip to the center or call them and ask for a truck to take it there.

Different Uses For Old Artificial Turf

Here are some of the second uses you can give to your old artificial grass:

  • You can put it on the floor of your garage, at least part of it
  • Adapt your pet’s house, the turf can be put on top of the sealing, or inside for them to feel comfortable.  Just make sure the grass is not smelly, it’s okay if it’s a bit damaged somehow, but weird odors mixed with your dog or cat’s smells can be terrible.
  • If you have a section of your garden with real grass that’s damage by your pet, you can cover it with a part of the old artificial turf and put some decorations on top to camouflage it.
  • You can cut in shapes and write a message or make it have a specific form (your school, college, or company’s logo, for example) to decorate spaces
  • You can donate it art centers, they have creative artists that can transform it into artsy pieces
  • Cut it in small pieces and rub it with catnip, cat’s will scratch it and play with it, and since you will have a few meters, let’s just say you will be saving a lot of money on cat toys

Essentially, the second uses you can give to your old artificial turf are many, it’s up to you how to use it in the best way.  But remember, if you actually have the chance to recycle it, do so.  It will always be the most sustainable choice.
